What is personality? Personality is defined as ‘the combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual's distinctive character’. Two things are evident from this definition - first it is about who you truly are and second that it cannot be acquired in a short period of time.
Interview or the Personality Test is the final lap of the selection process in UPSC - GSI. It carries 200 marks (with no minimum qualifying marks). Marks obtained by the candidates in the Prelims and Main Examination (written examination) as well as Interview would determine their final ranking.
“The candidate will be interviewed by a Board who will have before them a record of his/her career. He/she will be asked questions on matters of general interest. The object of the interview is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in public service by a Board of competent and unbiased observers. The test is intended to judge the mental calibre of a candidate. In broad terms this is really an assessment of not only his intellectual qualities but also social traits and his interest in current affairs.”
Candidates who clear the Main exam are required to fill up the Detailed Application Form (DAF). It is like your biodata which is shared with the interview board members and contains all your personal and professional information. Contents such as your place of birth, subjects in graduation, details of the college, professional experience, interests, and hobbies are all mentioned in the DAF. Candidates are advised to take extra care while filling their DAF. It is very important to know each and every element of your DAF thoroughly as it gives panel members scope to ask questions about you. Here are a few tips:
UPSC – GSI interview is a test of your personality. So just try to be yourself and express your genuine opinions. Dress yourself in formal attire to look presentable. Make sure that you have all your relevant documents with you. Make a small group of your fellow aspirants for group discussion purposes and try to attend as many mock interviews as possible to identify your strengths and weaknesses. Take the feedback given during the mock interviews constructively and try to improve those areas. And finally, don’t stress too much about the interview and approach it with full confidence.
The programme will focus on novel ways of presentation, communication, body language, emotional stability, sense of empathy and answering mechanism.
The interview panel, besides checking and updating candidates on their knowledge of day-to-day affairs of national and international importance, will specifically also check for qualities such as – balance of judgment, clear and logical exposition, intellectual and moral integrity, mental alertness and ability for social cohesion and leadership.
Each interview is video-recorded and digitally provided to the candidate so that they can view their own interview and introspect their performance.
